GM Unveils 780-Mile PHEV

GM is reshaping the sports utility vehicle market with its newest Starlight L PHEV SUV, offering 260 km (~160 miles) of all-electric range, spacious six-passenger seating, and a modern technology package at an affordable price. This vehicle could be China’s best value hybrid and has the potential to be rebadged for the North American market. The Starlight L PHEV features a 106 hp 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle ICE and an electric drive motor that combine for a respectable 170 kW (~230 hp). The vehicle’s 37.9 kWh LFP battery pack offers roughly twice the capacity of a modern RAV4 Prime from Toyota.

GM’s New PHEV SUV

The Starlight L PHEV is the newest flagship of the joint SAIC-GM Wuling brand, and it provides Chinese buyers with a pure EV-like driving range and an ICE backup. Although this type of vehicle is not the most popular in the Chinese market, the rapidly increasing popularity of plug-in hybrids in North America makes it an attractive option for GM to consider rebadging for the North American market. The vehicle’s massive battery pack and impressive electric range make it an exciting development in the world of PHEVs.

Honda’s Autonomous Electric Lawnmower

Honda has begun production of its all-new, all-electric ProZision Autonomous ZTR, a high-tech land management tool designed for the commercial lawnmower market. The ProZision Autonomous promises landscapers the ability to drive a property one time, “teaching” the mower the route as they go, and then the machine heads back out on its own, relying on a comprehensive suite of GPS positioning, LiDAR, radar, and a 360-degree visual sensor to reproduce the trainer’s cutting path with an astonishing 3 cm (~1.25″) of accuracy.
